US(CA): Strong holiday demand compounded with light broccoli supplies
Prices for broccoli have been high recently because of a combination of strong demand and light supplies brought on by cold weather. The market is expected to remain as it is until after the holidays.
“Look for supplies to be below budget right now, though they will increase toward the end of this year and the beginning of next year,” said Joe Kaslin with Bengard Ranch. Prices have been high as a result of current supplies. On December 16, prices for a carton of bunched 14s from Salinas were between $20.00 and $26.45, and prices for a carton of loose crown cut were between $28.00 and 34.25.
“Historically, demand is good this time of year because of all the holiday parties and sales of different trays, but prices are higher than normal,” said Kaslin. “I don't think there will be an immediate downturn in prices next year, but I think there will be a drop after the new year.”
