The office of the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) in Cusco highlighted that, in the first quarter of this year, the production of Hass avocado for export in the region of Cusco surpassed 180 tons.
Senasa said that it was working in the province of Anta, in coordination with local avocado producers, which led to an exponential increase in the production of this fruit that is exported to the European market.
According to official figures, in 2013 the district of Limatambo, which is located in Anta, two hours from the city of Cusco, produced 10 tons of Hass and reported revenues of 23,000 soles; two years later production exceeded 200 tons and there were sales for more than 620,000 soles.
This year the results of the first quarter are encouraging, Cusco has achieved a production of 180 tons, which suggests that the avocado exports will increase considerably by the end of 2016.
Senasa said they constantly provided training to control pests and diseases, which contributed to improve the production and productivity of avocado crops; ensuring that their quality complies with the parameters and standards required by European countries.
Similarly, the phytosanitary controls carried out by specialists of this institution are key to detect the presence or appearance of new pests or diseases that could harm and affect production.
The district of Limatambo is the most important producer of Hass avocados in the region of Cusco, with nearly 30 locations and 100 producers that take their product to packaging plants authorized by Senasa in Ica, where they are processed and packaged for export to the European market.
