Shipment by rail greener than by truck
“From a fuel perspective, rail shipment is 3.5 times more efficient than truck shipment,” says Mike Townsend with Railex. “With the same amount of diesel, we can move 3.5 times more product than a road truck,” Townsend added.
With most companies nowadays devoting resources to sustainability and setting sustainability goals, Townsend admits that fuel efficiency has become a driver of Railex’ business. “We help companies in becoming more environmentally friendly. We have a green calculator on our website that allows companies to calculate their carbon emissions.” On a regular basis, Railex receives awards for the impact the company makes at the environmental level.
Capacity
Growing business has not created any problems due to flexibility when it comes to increasing capacity. “Our pool of railcars is a combination of cars that we own ourselves and cars leased from Union Pacific. With UP we always have the option to increase our capacity. A quick phone call is sufficient to add one or more railcars.”
