Antonio Latorrata
The packaging is very simple - it has a handle to make mini-watermelons easier to transport as well as our logo. "We tried to make something people would like and we managed to do it."
"Thanks to the latest weather, the quality of watermelons and melons is exceptional, both have high sugar contents, so people appreciate them."
Actually, something weird is happening, i.e. 8-10 kg traditional watermelons have suddenly become more popular than baby watermelons. "I think it may depend on the fact that Spain has almost stopped producing big watermelons. While it is true that families tend to prefer mini-watermelons, retailers and the H&R sector need the bigger ones."
Good demand for traditional watermelons.
Melon demand is also growing. Some areas in northern Italy have had to deal with a lot of bad weather and did not produce a lot, and growers in the south benefit from this situation.
Latorrata exports in Germany and Austria. Germany is not absorbing a lot of produce at the moment, probably because the Spanish fruit enters into competition with that from Italy. On the domestic front, the produce is sent to markets, retailers and wholesale markets.
