Lesage Champignons introduces BBQ concept for mushrooms
“The vegetable sector could get more from the grill segment”
The barbecue season has once again started, and grilled vegetables have become popular in recent years. “Grilling vegetables is being increasingly promoted and that is positive, because more could be had from that segment for the entire vegetable sector. We could take them in so many directions,” says Michel Lesage of Lesage Champignons. The company has been cultivating and supplying mushrooms to retailers, wholesalers and exporters for over 40 years.
New concept
Lesage is glad that mushrooms are being used on the barbecue more often now. “Of course, we can personally influence that, but we have to bring novelties on the market. For example, we recently introduced something new, a punnet of mushrooms with a marinade for on the barbecue. The concept is doing very well, people are looking for something different.”

Good market
According to Lesage the mushroom is a product that usually does better when the weather is not too warm. “That is why there was a good demand for our products in recent weeks. They are doing better than usual for this time of year. It is usually sunnier, and the supply of other vegetables is usually higher then. Prices for other vegetables are currently higher, and mushrooms are relatively cheap. Mushroom prices hardly change anyway. We always have fixed agreements with our buyers.”
Lesage Champignons is one of the largest players on the market of mushroom cultivation in Belgium. Production is for the domestic and international fresh market. Today, that production is around 55 tonnes per week. Lesage Champignons has about 60 employees.
