Drought and Turkish situation push vegetable prices up in Romania
Vegetables and fruits on the Romanian market have recently become more expensive, mostly as a result of both the drought conditions and the geopolitical context in Turkey, according to experts.
While not long ago it was possible to buy tomatoes for 2.5 to 3 lei* and cucumbers for about the same price, these currently cost an average of 4-5 lei. The same considerable increases were registered in the case of potatoes, which have gone from 1.5 lei to 2-3 lei in all markets in Romania. "The vegetables and fruits that are in season should be cheaper, but because they have very low yields, we should recover our investment," declared one of the Romanian producers.
Next week, in order to protect the domestic production, fruit and vegetable producers will meet with representatives of supermarkets to discuss what quantities of Romanian products they need to put on sale. "We will discuss issues related to the supply chain, to the volumes they'll need and also to prices," said Emil Dumitru, President of the National Federation Pro Agro.
