Agricola Tre C focuses on red bunch tomatoes

This is a company located in the province of Ragusa, Sicily. Two sets of brothers from two families are running the business, the Castiglione brothers are production managers while the Celeste brothers are sales managers. "The company was established by a group of friends who started with just a few hectares. Now we have 65 hectares, 37 of which are of greenhouses. The production cycle lasts 12 months from the end of August and harvesting is carried out between mid-November and late July," explains Gaetano Celeste, founder member of Agricola Tre C.

The company focuses on tomato production, which is harvested in bunches:
- cherry tomatoes, approx. 2.5 million kg;
- date tomatoes, approx. 1 million kg;
- mini plum tomatoes, approx. 2.5 million kg;
- camone tomatoes, approx. 300,000 kg

The production of red bunch tomatoes is of around 500,000 kg. The produce is so interesting that, thanks to the positive feedback, volumes will increase as of next year.

Product cultivation is entirely supervised and tomatoes are then sold all over the domestic territory. Around 30% of the produce is shipped abroad, specifically to: Malta, Switzerland, Greece, Romania and other European countries.

"We are not supplying retailers at the moment, although we'd like to. This year, 3 to 6 kg cardboards will be available. Our main objective is to supply consumers with a product that is appealing and tastes good. Thanks to our sunlight and microclimate, we can grow excellent produce."

The unique microclimate, however, was put to the test by the weird weather during winter 2015/16, and not only that. "Unfortunately, the high temperatures, competition from African countries and excessive produce from Turkey meant our production was affected by the low prices. We managed to limit the damage, but many had to close shop."

The 2016/17 campaign is about to start
"We would like to increase the 50 hectares of greenhouses over the next 2 years and improve the quality of our produce. The 2016/17 campaign will start around November 15th."
