Honduras: Melon exports to Asia and Europe increase

Honduran melon exports have grown significantly and they will continue to increase more now that the fruit will leave the country through the Gulf of Fonseca, as it will allow them to be more competitive.

This represents an important precedent in the positioning of Honduran products in the international market and opens up other major Asian markets, such as Taiwan and South Korea.

From May 24, 2016, Honduras started exporting melons to Japan, one of the most demanding markets in Asia, which certifies the country as an exporter of melons.

Honduras will export at least 100 more containers of melons, which will allow the country to generate 400 new jobs.

Economist and former minister of the Ministry of Economic Development, Juan Jose Cruz, said the growth of melon exports to markets such as Asia and Europe was good news for the country.

Cruz said that exporting the fruit from the Pacific Ocean saved time and money, which means the country would be more competitive.

He also said they had to look for new production areas because their land was very fertile and Honduran workers were skilled and cheap, when compared to other countries.

He concluded by saying that Honduras was on the right path, thanks to its economic and fiscal reforms, and the legal certainty and incentives that workers in the field had.
