"Guatemala: "The goal is to introduce our rambutan to Europe"
Guatemala's rambutan harvest begins in late April and, despite the climate changes there have been, producers expect the campaign to be promising. "Fortunately the area where we are located, which is one of the main producers of this fruit, hasn't had any major problems with climate change. Furthermore, we as a company expect to grow by 20% when compared to other years," said Edilson Hernandez, of the Prime Tropics company.
With more than 140,000 trees, this Guatemalan company is able to offer more than 100 million units of rambutan. "We've conducted a rigorous selection of varieties and chose the R134 variety, which has allowed us to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. Mexico and Honduras have become an indirect competition in recent years. We begin in late April, while they begin in June and September, respectively," the representative stated.
"We are also very happy to be pioneers in cultivating finger limea on a large scale in the region, we have 5 hectares of this crop. We also have a diverse offering of tropical fruits, such as mangosteen, achachairu, sapodilla, and pitahaya," said the spokesman.
"The main markets for this fruit are the United States and Canada, and we also send some shipments to Europe. Our goal is to intensify our entry into this market. But we want to intensively explore the European market, where demand for exotic products, such as rambutan, is growing," concluded Hernandez.
