Largest banana producer in the state

Brazil: The municipality of Delfinópolis promotes first fruit fair

The municipality of Delfinópolis, southwest of Minas Gerais, known for being one of the state's largest banana producers, will host the 1st Banana Fair from June 20 to 24. The wide and varied program will include field day, lectures, roundtable, appointment agenda and business fair, as well as cultural attractions, shows, camp and typical foods. The Minas Gerais State Technical Assistance and Extension Company (Emater-MG) is one of the collaborators of the event, which will take place at Padre Ivo Soares Matos Avenue, 814, in front of the state school in the city.

"It will be an opportunity for producers to exchange ideas and experiences among themselves and with companies that will be exposing machines and equipment to the activity," summarizes agronomist and extension engineer at Emater-MG's municipality office, Sávio Marinho.

According to the agronomist, among the highlights is the realization of the Circuito Frutificaminas, on the morning of June 21, with lectures by specialists in the area, addressing topics such as: management of banana fusariosis and soil health in banana farming. A lecture about Certifica Minas Frutas, a state government program that proposes the implementation of certification of fruit producing properties, will be another strong point of programming.

According to Marinho, a subject of great relevance for those who live in the banana farming activity will be the lecture "Options for management of banana fusariosis in Brazil: Actions necessary to prevent entry and mitigation of damage in the face of the threat of Tropical 4". The disease, which has the power to decimate one of the world's most popular fruits, will be handled by Embrapa specialist Miguel Dita, who is a member of the UN Fusarium Prevention Committee, according to Marinho.

Geographical Indication
Another issue that should draw attention to the Delfinópolis fair, according to Sávio Marinho, is the Geographical Indication (GI) in bananas, an objective that has mobilized producers and their representative entities to value products in a geographical area, maintaining local standards in Identification of their origin and services, by means of the Denomination of Origin (DO) and Indication of Origin (IP) modalities.

"The theme will be approached from the experiences of producers' associations, such as the Association of Banana Growers of Corupá (Asbanco) of Santa Catarina, which recently conquered the IG of the Corupá banana. Or, the Central Association of Fruit Growers of the North of Minas (Abanorte) that created the brand Frutas do Jaíba. The Association of Producers of Canastra Cheese (Aprocam) will also be present, since it obtained the IG of the famous cheese, manufactured in the Serra da Canastra region, "says Sávio.
