Dominican Republic: Banana exports to Europe increase

"In the Dominican Republic, the banana sector's organic production for the European Union and the United States has been growing in the last 5 years. This increase has been significant for our company as we have been increasing our export volumes to the aforementioned markets. We are focusing on obtaining new certifications to keep our customers satisfied," stated Juan Carlos Filpo, from Rincon Bananero SRL. RICOBANA, of the Dominican Republic.

RICOBANA is a company that produces organic bananas for export to Europe. "Our banana company started producing in 2004, and it's been a solid banana trading and export company ever since. I am the president of the company and I have dedicated part of my life to the sustainable production of organic bananas in a socially and environmentally responsible way." The company is certified with different organic standards such as Organic-NOP-EU, Global Gap, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance and we are working to obtain the Demeter International certification.

"Finca Rincon Bananero and its management are committed to giving consumers organic bananas that comply with the highest quality standards so that they can have access to fresh, organic and environmentally friendly products," Juan Carlos Filpo stated.

The property is located in Km 9 of Laguna Verde, Monte Cristi, and it has a total of 181 hectares devoted to banana production. "We have production all year, but the peak season is in summer, as the weather conditions are more favorable then and the farm's productivity increases significantly. We export our bananas to the Netherlands, France, Italy, England and Germany," he stated.

"As far as the European market is concerned, we have increased the number of customers for these markets, so exports have increased satisfactorily. As for the entry of Ecuador, our competitor, to the European Union, we are working to offer the highest quality of exportable fruits that have efficient monitoring and banana protection services," Filpo added.
