Biggest problem is salt content, not water shortage

Brazilian melon volumes stablising

The melon market is looking better, after being weaker from mid-September through most of October. The demand for, especially, yellow melons and watermelons, as well as Piel de Sapo, is picking up. Although the volumes sent to Europe over the last few years could not be met, stabilisation does seem be taking place.

According to an importer, the volumes are at around the 2014/15 level. There was a strong growth in the period in comparison to the previous year. The water shortages do not seem to be the biggest threat to the Brazilian growers anymore, since there is now more water available. There are however, major problems with the salt content. This will, no doubt, have an effect on production. The direction of the market at the end of the year is, therefore, also uncertain.
