Pili nuts available soon

What exactly are Pili in-shell nuts? This new product is about to be introduced in Italy by a small number of companies in the nut sector. They come from the Philippines and comply with all fair trade production parameters.

They have a very pleasant delicate flavour, less intense than walnuts and with a slight hint of almond. These nuts are perfect as a healthy snack both on their own or with other nuts.

"Our small group of companies really believes in this kind of product. In addition to the good flavour and nutritional characteristics, we were impressed by its fair trade production: the nuts are certified by the Philippinès Association, processed locally and are sustainable along the entire chain. The pouch they are sold in is also biodegradable, ink included," explains Aurelio Manuzzi from Manuzzi Srl.

Opening these nuts is almost a game. The nut has a rather thick woody shell that is scored at origin. Each pouch contains a small steel lever, made from recycled steel, to open them. The shells are also excellent fuel for stoves, fireplaces and barbecues.

"One hundred grams of shelled nuts contain 8.1 grams of fibre, 13 grams of protein and 31.7 milligrams of vitamin E," reports quality manager Marilena Mariotti.

It is one of the main existing sources of vitamin E and 10 nuts are enough to meet the daily recommended dose. But Pili nuts are also a source of Phosphorous (79% of RDA), Magnesium (65%) and Manganese (200%)."

Once open, the nuts have a rather thick yet not bitter outer husk. The recommendation is not to remove it as it is a source of fibre and nutrients.
