“There are tight volumes through to the Easter Holiday due to unseasonably cold weather in South Florida,” says Bert Barnes with Duda Farm Fresh Foods in Oviedo, Fl. Barnes adds that the quality of the sweet corn is good but that the current supply is down roughly 50 percent due to colder weather. While the current supply comes from South Florida and will continue to do so until Memorial Day, after that, supplies transition to hailing from Georgia. (Duda grows corn in Michigan as well).
Competition meanwhile comes from Mexico while demand is from Texas and the Northeast markets.
Supply relief to come
Not surprisingly, the pricing has pushed higher due to the limited supplies through Easter, but promotable volumes are anticipated post-Easter holiday. “Sweet corn is always a springtime favorite so consumption will be on the rise as people start gathering for Easter and other spring holidays,” says Barnes. “But supply will return to normal in April and stay consistent through transition to Georgia around Memorial Day.”
Additionally, Duda’s Super Sweet Corn product line is packaged in 100 percent recyclable tray packs as a response to younger consumer’s concerns about purchasing environmentally-friendly packaging.
