"China: "Current excessive supply of garlic exports will hopefully change in 2019"

Garlic is one of China's most important agricultural products. China accounts for 70%-80% of global garlic export. Chinese garlic is superior to foreign garlic in both quantity and quality. The export volume of Chinese garlic continues to grow, as does its popularity in foreign markets.

Chinese garlic export suffered from high domestic garlic prices in 2016. Export volume and export price both went down. The export market gradually recovered in 2017 and the export volume rapidly increased.

The production volume greatly decreased this year as a result of widespread plant disease and insect pests. However, this is an annual phenomenon. The influence of plant disease and insect pest this year is relatively small. Export trade still suffers from excessive supply. The reason for this situation is the continuous growth of surface area devoted to garlic plantations. Garlic prices have been high in recent years, so many farmers decided to expand garlic plantation and production volume consequently increased. It is estimated that these conditions, where supply exceeds demand, will change in 2019.
