Peru will streamline and facilitate commercial import and export operations with the United States as a result of the signing of a Mutual Recognition Agreement between the SUNAT and the US Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP).
According to the SUNAT, this agreement recognizes the US Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program and the Peruvian Authorized Economic Operator (OEA).
This mutual recognition, which is the first signed by the United States with a South American country, will help facilitate bilateral foreign trade and ensure the logistics chain, providing mutual benefits for operators certified under such programs, which will allow them to reduce costs and time in their activities, and give Peruvian products a greater level of competitiveness.
The United States is the second commercial partner of Peru after China. Last year, bilateral trade between both countries stood at nearly US $15 billion, i.e. 12% higher than in 2016
This is the fourth agreement signed by Peru, after the ones it signed with Korea, Uruguay and the countries of the Pacific Alliance (Colombia, Chile and Mexico), which strengthen the OAS program to achieve recognition with its main strategic partners.
Thus, the institution ratifies the commitment to maintain effective cooperation with other world-class Customs, consolidating strategic alliances that contribute to provide a customs service that is more efficient and has a better quality, which reduces costs and increases competitiveness, providing Peruvian companies with opportunities to grow.
