"We have the advantage that we are able to produce sweet potato all year round. This gives us the opportunity to offer fresh products to our customers at any time of the year. The other origins are more known in the market, such as Honduras or the United States as they have been working with this product for a long time”, starts Joshua Guerrero from Tropifoods, Costa Rica.
He explains that the company respects the other producing areas, however there will be a golden opportunity for Costa Rican sweet potato next year. “As they are dealing lower yields, there is space in the market for consumers to try the Costa Rican supply. It’s a new product for our country, but it has good quality just like the other produce from our country like pineapple, bananas, and yuca.”
The company will focus on Europe for their sweet potato export. “The United States has a protected market for sweet potato, which means we can´t export to this market. We are looking forward to export this product to all of Europe, like we have been doing for 15 years now with our other products as the roots and exotics.”
“Our expectation for this first season is for customers to know that there is a new product from Costa Rica, to taste it and to see the quality that we have available. The intention is to increase production year by year, and for the next season even start bio production of sweet potato”, concludes the producer and exporter.
