Hans van der Meulen, Rida Trade:

"Ginger market improving after a difficult year"

Traditionally, the demand for ginger increases again at the end of the year. "But is has not been an easy year", says Hans van der Meulen of the Dutch company, Rida Trade. "There was a lot of stock on the market and prices were lagging. Demand has only just started picking up in the last two weeks. I expect prices to rise by 15-20% in the next week or two."

Rida Trade cultivates ginger in Shandong, China. They also buy enough ginger in China to provide their clients - mostly European wholesalers - with this product. "Last year we imported 700 containers from China", says Hans. "We also receive two containers from Brazil every week. In season, we import Thai and Peruvian ginger too. We have organic ginger available from Peru and China."

"We are nearing the end of the Chinese season, so the ginger's quality is decreasing. This is why we currently have about 30 workers in our warehouse in Poeldijk ensuring the ginger reaches our clients according to the correct specifications", concludes Hans. Besides ginger, Rida Trade also has an extensive assortment of other Chinese products. These include sweet potatoes, potatoes, garlic, mushrooms, Nashi pears, and eddoes.
