Mexico expects to export 120 tons of avocado to the USA for Super Bowl

The US will consume about 120 thousand tons of avocados from Michoacan during the National Football League's (NFL) semifinal matches and Super Bowl.

This, according to the president of the Association of Avocado Producers, Packers, and Exporters of Mexico (APEAM), Gabriel Alejandro Villaseñor Zurita.

Villaseñor Zurita also said that in 2017, Mexican avocado exports had amounted to 2.5 billion dollars.

In 2018, the product's price decreased because there was an over production of avocado. In 2018 there were 131 thousand hectares producing avocado, while in 2017 there were 124 thousand hectares in production. The number of hectares and producers devoted to this fruit has increased each year.

Regarding the Super Bowl, the sporting event in which more avocado is consumed in the United States, the president of the APEAM said that "Americans are very used to eating avocado chips or guacamole with potatoes since the beginning of the playoffs. That consumption increases in the semifinals and peaks with the Super Bowl. Obviously, we have very good sales on the day of the Super Bowl."

Villaseñor Zurita said that in January 2018, the United States consumed about 100 thousand tons of avocado during the football season. "We estimate that this year we can reach 120 thousand tons," he added. "During the normal season, the United States consumes 800 to 1,000 trucks, i.e. 18 to 20 thousand tons of avocado. In the Super Bowl, sales increase by 20 or 30 percent.
