Mexico: Michoacan exported a total of 88,700 tons of mango in 2019

Michoacan's mango producing sector achieved a record mango production and export volume this year after sending 88,700 tons of mangoes to international markets, according to the Ministry of Rural and Agricultural Food Development, Sedrua. 85% of the total volume was sent to the United States.

Ruben Medina Niño, the head of the Sedrua, said that their priority was to strengthen the mango production chain's infrastructure and equipment to add value to this crop. The state of Michoacan has the capacity to export a larger volume, he said. However, it needs to improve its marketing conditions to reach international markets with higher quality. He also stated that the guava productive chain was also a priority for Sedrua and that they planned to improve its sanitary and packaging conditions to increase its presence in foreign trade.

In the 2019 season, 142,000 tons of Haden, Ataulfo, Tommy, Kent, Thai, and Creole mango varieties were harvested.

Michoacan has 20,000 hectares devoted to mango production, 13,650 of which are certified for export to the United States. The mango is also sent to Canada and some regions of Europe and Asia.

There are 4,250 mango producers in the municipalities of Nuevo Urecho, Gabriel Zamora, Mugica, Paracuaro, Buenavista, Tepalcatepec, San Lucas, Coahuayana, and Lazaro Cárdenas.
