"Volumes of Chinese Autumn Moon pears grow but retail price remains stable"

Early-season pear varieties begin to enter the Chinese fruit market starting from June. The weather conditions this year were much better than last year. The overall production volume therefore greatly increased. This is quite literally a year of abundance for pear farmers.

According to Mr. Chi of Chiteng Industry (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., this year their harvest was not bad at all: "Our production volume greatly expanded in comparison with last year. This is on the one hand a result of stable weather conditions. On the other hand, we also expanded the overall surface area of our pear orchards because our sales last year were quite good. We currently supply a total of more than 2 million kg of pears every year."

This is the golden week of the National Day holiday. Apart from wholesale traders and those who work in fruit companies, many people enjoy time off during this period. In addition, this is the period when many new fruit varieties enter the Chinese market. Many traders put on promotions to encourage fruit sales during this period. These promotions draw the attention of consumers. According to Mr. Chi: "Sales are a bit slow in between Mid-Autumn Festival [13 September 2019] and National Day [1 October 2019]. We expect the delivery speed of fruit to pick up again after the National Day holiday is over. When that happens the price will likely rise again as well."

Mr. Chi further explained that the price of their pears is quite stable. The price is stable because their pears are sold under the brand name "Chi's Fruit", which is a well-known brand among Chinese consumers. "Even though there have been some price fluctuations, these fluctuations were very small and well within the accepted range of price fluctuations. The current market price of pears is around 56-60 yuan [7.83-8.39 USD] per box. We benefit from efficient marketing methods. Buyers have the utmost confidence in our brand and in our pears. In recent years, consumers have begun to attach more importance to food safety and they are more careful when they purchase fruit."

"Autumn Moon pear is a Japanese pear variety. The variety was introduced from Japan to China by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences several years ago. The Autumn Moon pear is crisp and sweet. The product quality is good and the pear is juicy. Chinese consumers love the Autumn Moon pear. Last year we entered wholesale markets in Shanghai and Jiaxing. This year we added the wholesale markets in Hangzhou and Guangzhou. The retail season of our Autumn Moon pears begins every year in July and continues until May in the subsequent year. Furthermore, we also supply Autumn Dew pears. The supply season of Autumn Dew pears begins in August, one month later than the supply season of Autumn Moon pears."
