Cambodia has obtained permission for direct transport of Cambodian bananas to the Chinese market. Now there is news in the Cambodian fruit industry that mangoes may become the next fruit to obtain permission for direct transport to China. Fruit traders in Cambodia and China alike are raising their heads in anticipation. Manager Jin Huaping from Zhejiang Gong River Agricultural Industrial Development Co., Ltd. shared his insights into the prospects of Cambodian banana export to China.
"Vietnamese mangoes obtained permission for direct transport to the Chinese market years ago. The Vietnamese export season neatly coincides with the end of the Chinese mango production season. Vietnamese mangoes are therefore well known to Chinese consumers. The overall import volume of Vietnamese mangoes through Pingxiang port is reportedly more than 200 thousand tons per year. However, although the mangoes are labeled as 'Vietnamese' mangoes, a large portion of this import volume actually comes from Cambodia. The costs of transport, packaging, and labor will be greatly reduced when Cambodia obtains permission to export mangoes directly to China. The distribution procedures will also be much simpler." According to Jin Huaping, "official data shows that the overall surface area devoted to mango plantation in Cambodia reached around 70 thousand hectares. This signifies that there is a huge export potential in the Cambodian mango industry."
"Cambodia has two mango production seasons per year. The peak period of mango sales begins every year in October and continues until May in the subsequent year. We have a mango orchard in Stung Treng Province, Cambodia. In our mango orchard we regulate the period in which our trees carry fruit in such a way that we can guarantee year-round mango supply. As for the Chinese mango industry, the first production season begins in Hainan every year around Chinese Spring Festival [25 January 2020]. The mango production areas in Guangxi and Sichuan gradually follow."
"Domestic mango supply lasts until October as one production area after the other brings their mangoes to the market. The Vietnamese mangoes take over in autumn and flood the Chinese market in large volumes just as domestic mangoes retreat from the market. The overall import volume of top-quality mangoes from Australia and South America also grows every year."
With regard to domestic consumer requirements for mangoes, manager Jin explained, "the most popular mango varieties in the Chinese market currently are Daqing and tainong mangoes. Chinese consumers are traditionally quite sensitive to the price of fruit, but in recent years, more and more Chinese consumers have begun to pay attention to other aspects of fruit such as product quality and food safety."
The main product varieties in the Cambodian orchard of Zhejiang Gong River Agricultural Industrial Development are the Daqing mango, Australian mango, and Keitt mango. The mango trees in this orchard have just opened the first blossom of the 2019-2020 production season.
