Red cape gooseberry is a specialty fruit from Northeastern China. The production this season in Jixi is stable and quality is high. Huang Dianling, Manager of Haolong Manor Fushai Fruit and Vegetable Industrial Park, talked about this fruit that still needs to be discovered by a lot of consumers.
“Red cape gooseberries grown in Heilongjiang are mostly grown in the open fields, available from September to November. This season, we have produced about 1,500 kg. Thanks to the sunny weather and the large temperature difference between day and night here in Jixi, the quality of this season’s crops is very good, juicy with glossy skin and high sugar content. Current market prices of regular products are 4-5 yuan/half a kilo, while organic products fetch 15 yuan/half a kilo. Prices have been relatively stable over recent years without significant fluctuations may be due to light production,” Huang said. “The current market is dominated by regular products. Hampered by regionality and outdated growing technology, the production of the organic product is light.”
“Red cape gooseberries are mainly grown in Northeastern China. Once ripened, the fruit tastes sweet, delicate and juicy, fresh and delicious, and has high medicinal value,” Huang said. “This year is the first year that we grew this fruit, so the production is not substantial. We use e-commerce platforms, WeChat Moments, and webcasts to promote our products, and they sell very fast. Our customers are mainly local consumers in Heilongjiang. We plan to increase our planted acreages next year in order to increase production and allow consumers in more regions to have the chance to taste this fruit."
In addition to cape gooseberries, Fushai Fruit and Vegetable Industrial Park also offers a variety of speciality fruits from Northeast China including crab apples and the Beta grape variety for winemaking.
