"2019 has been more than positive - demand has increased for all the main varieties. In addition, our packaging is increasingly eco-friendly and we are working on new projects that also go in this direction," reports Fabio Altamura, president of OP Altamura in Pontecagnano Faiano (SA).
"In 2019, for example, we launched a new 9x125 gram format so that an additional punnet can be placed in each single crate. This in turn means we can send over 100 punnets more with each pallet, thus saving on logistics."
As for the bad weather that characterized most of the year, the manager commented that "of course it affected us, as it caused a lack of baby leaves on the European market but, luckily, we did not encounter too many difficulties."
Together with baby spinach, the PO's other leading product is rocket, which will soon obtain the PGI mark. "Over the past few years, customer demands have been increasingly focused on niche products, which means we are constantly testing new varieties and introducing new types of leaves."
"Over the past year, we have also tested the digital probes developed by the EVJA start-up, which enable us to use a technology that can improve the access and sharing of climate data."
In addition, 2019 was the first year of intense activities in our new production facility. "This undoubtedly enabled us to improve all production processes. We have also launched a line of edible flowers called Jardin - Fiori in cucina and are happy to say it is doing well on both the domestic and international markets."
"The launch of this new line coincided with our attending of a prestigious charity event organized every year on the island of Ischia (Ischia Safari) which involves dozens of Michelin-starred chefs from all over Italy."
What is in store for 2020?
"Our mission for next year is to reduce our environmental impact even more, experiment with new production techniques and employ new and more sophisticated technologies. It is essential for the agricultural world to be more sensitive to issues regarding climate change. Basically, in 2020, we are looking to continue experimenting and innovating while taking advantage of the new technologies that are revolutionizing our world. The PO will also be committed in strengthening its associates to help them grow."
OP Altamura will attend Fruit Logistica (Berlin, 5th-7th February 2020). "This year, we will have a 100 sq m stand in Hall 4.2 (Stand C-02): in addition to presenting everything that is new in 2020, we are also going to set up an inn to serve all the best our land has to offer."
