The first South African pears will arrive on Monday 3 February at 4Fruit Company in Ridderkerk, The Netherlands. "We start with Williams Bon Chrétien, followed by Abate Fetel, Cheeky and Rosemarie," says Oscar van Turenhout. According to the importer, South Africa has a good harvest this year.
"This year there has been sufficient water and there has not been too much wind, so there is not as much damage to the skin of the fruit as in other years. The sizes also look great this year."
"Overall, fewer and fewer overseas pears have arrived on the European market in recent years. Our supplier in South Africa - Vintage - has, however, invested heavily in pear cultivation. For example, a plantation was purchased last year and the fruit is packed in three packing stations. We therefore have a nice volume at our disposal in the coming months," says Oscar. When selling pears, 4Fruit Company focuses primarily on European wholesalers. The pears are available in 12.5 kilos with 90 packages per pallet.
"The market conditions are favourable. On the European market we see increasing prices for Conference, a limited volume of Doyenné du Comice and extremely low stocks of Abate Fetel pears. We therefore expect a much better market than last year. At that time, although there were not too many South African pears, the prices at the start of the season were incredibly high and the market started in the end. Now that prices start at a normal level, much more demand is generated. "
