Peru could become the second largest global avocado exporter

According to estimates from the Association of Exporters (Adex), the growth of avocado exports in Peru could position the country as the second world exporter of this fruit in 2020, displacing the Netherlands, which since 2018 occupies this position behind Mexico.

However, water availability and market diversification, among other issues, must be taken into account for Peru win over this position, so the country must continue with the signing of more phytosanitary protocols.

The participation of entrepreneurs in international missions and fairs in order to showcase their offer is very important to achieve the opening of new markets. In that sense, Adex organizes the Expoalimentaria fair, which will take place from September 30 to October 2 at the Jockey Exhibition Center.

Adex recalled that the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) had stated in the Peru Exporta magazine that it was in negotiations with Malaysia and the Philippines for this fruit to enter these markets and that more Peruvian regions were now able to export avocado to Chile.

According to the Gestion website, two years ago, world exports of this fruit totaled 5.551 billion dollars. Mexico led the global ranking with exports worth $ 2.392 billion and a 43% worldwide share. It was followed by the Netherlands (733.8 million dollars) with a growth of 15% and a 13.2% share.

Peru, with 723 million dollars, concentrated 12% of the share and achieved a 23% increase, surpassing all the top 5 markets in growth.

Scope of the avocado in 2019
The avocado arrived at 33 destinations last year. The Netherlands, with $ 249,472,000 (-6.3%), and the US with $231,748,000 (31.7%) had a joint participation of 64%.

They were followed by Spain, the United Kingdom, Chile, China (-15%), Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, and Canada.

The top ten avocado export companies were Avocado Packing Company SAC, Sociedad Agricola Drokasa SA, Agricola Cerro Prieto SA, Camposol SA, Consorcio de Productores de Fruta SA, Camet Trading SAC, Frinicultural Corporation of Chincha SAC, Viru SA, Plantaciones del Sol SAC, and Agricola Hoja Redonda SA
