The mango market has been quite difficult of late. "We are moving toward the end of the Peruvian season. That country, however, sent considerably more mangos than last year. You can see this in the European market's demand and prices," says Efrain Saucedo Nuñez of the Dutch company, Fruta del Huerto. "Peru is still dominating this market. But, the market is slowly switching over to Brazil. The Brazilian supply is, however, still limited. About 60 - 70 containers from Brazil reach the market in Europe per week."
"There is a surplus on the market of mostly the large 7/8 sizes. The smaller 9 to 12 sizes are selling well. This has resulted in prices of between €3,50 and €5, so not too expensive," says Efrain. "The volumes from Peru are now slowing down. Many promotions are planned with mangos toward Easter. The market is, therefore, expected to revive within a few weeks. Until then, it is a matter of oversupply."
The Coronavirus is having a limited effect on mango sales. "Italy is a reasonably large mango market. You see that especially the wholesaler markets there, are being cautious with their orders. That market is, however, not completely locked down."
Fruta del Huerto is the Mexican lime farm, San Jose Tropical's European sales office. That makes it one of the five largest lime importers on the continent. The lime market is not great, but this is not having a huge impact on Fruta del Huerto. "We, fortunately, have several programs. And as growers, we have the supply well under control. That keeps us well informed when it comes to stock," Efrain concludes.
