The cherry import season is gradually coming to an end in China and the season of domestic cherries is about to begin. Cherries have gained immense popularity in the Chinese market in recent years. The production volume of domestic cherries rapidly expanded in response to this development.
Mrs. Ding, a cherry retailer from Baotai Town in Dalian recently shared her insights into the current conditions of the Chinese cherry market: "We recently celebrated the official opening of the cherry production season in Dalian. The cherries are already ripe enough to be harvested and sold on the market. The first shipment from Dalian entered the market in March, just like last year. The cherry price is quite high at the moment, because we are still at the very start of the new season. As the season proceeds, the price is expected to come down. The highest-quality cherries in the exceptional category of 15 gr and above sell for 100 yuan [14.09 USD] per 0.5 kg. Cherries in the first category of 12-15 gr sell for 95 yuan [13.39 USD] per 0.5 kg. Cherries in the second category of 10-12 gr sell for 70 yuan [9.86 USD] per 0.5 kg. And cherries in the third category of 8-10 gr sell for 60 yuan [8.46 USD] per 0.5 kg. We can provide cherries with different qualities based on customer requests."
Mrs. Ding further stated, "this year the cherry production volume is on the same level as last year. The cherries benefited from stable weather conditions all year long. The overall product quality is excellent. The flavor of our cherries is quite competitive with cherries from other production areas. The price is also reasonable. We plan to introduce a series of cherry-related products later this season. We plan to develop our cherry export and hope to find overseas wholesale dealers willing to cooperate with us."
The main product variety is the Meizao [Beautiful Early] cherry. "The area around Bohai Bay is an important production area for Chinese cherries. This is also a well-developed agricultural area where the cherries ripen early. The most famous production areas are in Yantai, Shandong, and Dalian, Liaoning."
"Our cherries come from Dalian. These cherries belong to an early spring variety. The cherries ripen early, which gives them a competitive advantage in the Chinese cherry market. They sell well and the price is quite high. The four seasons are clearly defined in the Bohai Bay littoral. The temperature differences between day and night are big. The Bohai Bay littoral is one of the few areas in China to provide the environment that is perfectly suitable for cherry plantation. In addition, the cherries from this area enter the market in late March and supply continues until June, which is perfectly staggered with the supply of import cherries. In other words, Dalian cherries and import cherries do not compete because they are not on the Chinese market at the same time. The supply season of import cherries complements the domestic cherry production season."
"It is difficult to say how the market will develop. The global spread of COVID-19 brings a lot of uncertainty to the market. We have an excellent selection of top-quality cherries. We represent several cherry farmers who can supply large volumes of cherries. In addition, we can deliver cherries throughout China and we hope to further develop our export market as well. To that end, we are looking for overseas wholesale dealers."
