Supply chain and transportation organizations sent a letter to the Honorable Lawrence Kudlow of the United States National Economic Councl as well as the US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. In this letter, the signees “representing virtually every sector in the US food and agriculture supply chain” write to ensure that critical food and agricultural products can continue enjoy free movement to international markets.
According to the letter, there have been unfair detention and demurrage penalties imposed “on US agriculture by ocean carriers and Marine Terminal Operators during the coronavirus crisis.” A Proposed Interpretive Rule has been developed by the Federal Maritime Commission and the letter urges that this rule might be expeditiously adopted.
