The Chinese fruit market is currently recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic. The overall market trend shows a growth in purchase volumes for various kinds of fruit. The market conditions of grapes are particularly positive. The supply volume of Chilean grapes is abundant, and there are grapes from South Africa and Australia too. Large volumes of import grapes are widely available in the Chinese market. This week they were joined by domestic grapes from Yunnan. The first harvest of Yunnan grapes entered the market in small volumes. Grapes from Yunnan always enter the Chinese market earlier than other domestic grapes. Mr. Zhou recently shared his analysis of current conditions in the Chinese grape market.
According to Mr. Zhou, "the grapes from Yunnan production areas entered the market before grapes from any other production area in China. The growing conditions were quite good this year. The weather was great and there was sufficient sunlight for an abundant harvest. The overall production volume increased in comparison with last year. We are ready for an excellent production season. In addition, the sugar content of our grapes is relatively high this production season, around 16-20%. This is good for our sales volume because Chinese consumers are quite fond of sweet grapes. The price of grapes is quite good for this time of year. We sell our grapes based on different classifications and the prices are between 60 and 120 yuan [8.52-17.04 USD] per 0.5 kg."
Mr. Zhou sells a wide variety of grapes including Sunshine Rose grapes. "There are not many varieties currently on the market. We mainly sell the Sunshine Rose variety. That grape variety is significantly more popular than other varieties. Sales conditions suffered from the outbreak of COVID-19, but because the overall supply volume is quite large, the price remained stable. We do hope the sales conditions will improve in the coming weeks. Although the market is flooded by import grapes, we are not worried about the sales of our grapes, because the imported grapes are of different varieties than domestic grapes. We have several vineyards in Jiangsu, Yunnan, and Xinjiang with a total surface area of more than 67 hectares."
