"Overall market supply is stable"

New Zealand Sonya apples arrive in China

The New Zealand apple production season is in full swing. Although the world is in the middle of a pandemic, the apple production season still continues. New Zealand exports apples to other countries as usual. One of the most important export markets is China. Shenzhen Yuanxing Fruit Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as 'Yumsun") is a Chinese importer, wholesale dealer, and supplier specialized in fresh fruit. The company has worked hard in recent years to promote New Zealand apples in the wholesale markets and supermarkets of China. "Market feedback shows that Chinese consumers love New Zealand apples."

Fion Lin of Yumsun recently talked about the current conditions in the Chinese apple market: "We started the New Zealand apple season in February with the Breeze apple variety. The production season of this variety is already almost over. We are now at the beginning of the production season of another important apple variety from New Zealand, the Sonya apple. The first shipping container of the Sonya apples arrived on April 19th and the apples immediately entered the market. They received the highest praise from Chinese consumers. In the end, the Chinese apple market slightly slowed down even after people returned to work when the quarantine measures were loosened. However, the sales conditions of the New Zealand apple varieties are much better than the sales conditions of other apple varieties. Although the sales speed is slightly slower than around this time last year, the market demand for Sonya apples is still as strong as ever."

"We receive new shipping containers with New Zealand apples in Hong Kong or Shekou, Shenzhen, every week. The time it takes to load and unload a ship, or the time it takes for the journey itself, are both quite uncertain during this COVID-19 pandemic. Every country in the world is currently dealing with these kinds of transport issues. This means that we have to be particularly careful when we import new apples. We therefore keep in close contact with our business partners in New Zealand. This is the only way we can be fully prepared."

The Sonya apple is a new variety that Yumsun first introduced to the Chinese market in 2017. Yumsun has continued to promote this apple variety ever since. "The Sonya is an extremely reliable apple variety. The shelf-life is quite long and the flavor is particularly characteristic. Neither flavor nor texture will suffer from long-term storage. Furthermore, the sugar content is quite high. The apple is crisp and the color is just right, both yellow and red at the same time. We are currently selling the Sonya apple variety in first-tier cities throughout China, but we are planning to expand our sales channels for this variety to include wholesale markets and supermarkets in second- and third-tier cities. This will allow an even greater number of Chinese consumers to experience the delicious flavor of the Sony apple from New Zealand."
