Last week, the Dutch company, Fonkels Innovative Packaging, launched new, sustainable punnets. These are for 500g and 1kg cherries. These cherry containers are made from 100% recycled cardboard. They can be recycled again as old paper after use.
The punnets were developed in collaboration with cherry growers. They are, therefore, well suited to the harvesting process. For example, ten of the 500g containers fit in a blue EPS crate. Eight of the 1kg punnets fit. The height of the 1kg cherry punnet was also considered.
The crates can be stacked and even have a nice 'head'. This is perfect for harvesting and sales. The container's construction is extra-sturdy and has four holes for optimal ventilation. The material is also very moisture-resistant. These punnets can be personalized. Fonkels can develop this design, with the farmer, free of charge.
Initial reactions to these cherry punnets have been very positive. "Finally, a sustainable alternative for plastic containers" to "my clients prefer seeing our natural products in sustainable packaging". These sustainable punnets will, hopefully, often be seen in farm stores and such this coming season.
The 500g containers replace the plastic ones which weighed about 13g. The 1kg ones replace the roughly 20g plastic variety. Fonkels hopes to save between 10.000 and 25.000kg of plastic. That will be, along with fruit growers, for this cherry season.
These cherry punnets form part of Fonkels' Fruity line. This line has 100% sustainable packaging for various products. These include strawberries, raspberries, other berries, apples, pears, and plums.
