Kees van den Bosch, Freeland:

"Opposite world, few yellow Dutch onions available amongst an abundance of red"

Sales of open field vegetables this year are very different from in other years. "Normally we continue with yellow onions until the new ones arrive, but now there are packers who have not had them for weeks. Red onions, on the other hand are plentiful, while that season is normally over and it was predicted we would run out this winter. Fortunately, the Dutch red onions are of good quality, better than the Egyptian ones, which cannot be kept for too long due to the rainfall. "

"Other products have seen demand rocket. The availability of cauliflower and broccoli is not big, although there is now more supply on the market than two weeks ago. But the product continues to go fast. The cauliflower has been expensive for two months. The price of a box of French cauliflower has even reached 25 euros. For the Dutch, around 10 euros per box is currently being paid and that is still a great price. "

"The season of the Egyptian pumpkins continues to run remarkably long. People continue to eat them. Iceberg lettuce, on the other hand, is more difficult to sell, but that is always the case until the longest day. A lot of iceberg lettuce traditionally goes to Italy. Whether those sales get going also depends on the tourist flow. After all, the leek has been bad all winter and cheap after the hoarding period. Now we are in the transition from the old to the new leek and there is not much supply and the prices are higher," concludes Kees .
