Pittman & Davis, a family-owned company from Texas that's been in business for over 80 years, tackled ethylene and bacteria related issues by investing in Miatech’s Bio-Turbo technology. In 2018, the company installed Bio Turbo at the cold storage in Harlingen, Texas and shortly thereafter observed significant improvements in the fruits’ quality.
As Pittman & Davis expanded into a wider variety of fruits than its original citrus line, it also began to experience new challenges. For instance, the company faced difficulties in storing apples and pears, which are known for high ethylene production and sensitivity. Ethylene gas triggers the ripening process, thus fruits soften, fade and lose commercial value. Bio Turbo played a crucial role in solving these issues. Now, Pittman & Davis benefits from high-quality produce, which remains fresh and firm for a longer storage time.
“A number of years ago we decided to expand our fruit product line to apples and pears. As that business has grown we have learned a lot. While we had cold storage space, we still had issues with premature ripening while holding the pears and apples for shipping. Miatech is the second ethylene control product that we have tried and are satisfied with the results,” shares Andy Graham, Vice President of Operations at Pittman & Davis.
Bio Turbo is a patented technology manufactured in the United States by Miatech, based in Clackamas, Oregon. It effectively cleans the storage atmosphere of ethylene gas and airborne pathogens. When compared to other solutions, Bio Turbo is recognized as being affordable and easy to maintain.
