Complejo Agroindustrial Beta (Peru)

"Cherry has all the characteristics of a high export product"

The cherry has become the great new bet of the Peruvian agro-exporter Complejo Agroindustrial Beta, which plans to compete in international markets against the large global producers of this fruit.

“If it works and it adapts to Peru, it will be the next blueberry. The market consumes this type of fruit, so there is a window. The cherry has all the characteristics of a high export product,” Lionel Arce, general manager of the company, stated.

In Arequipa, there are some positive results and the company is carrying out tests in Ica. "We have been harvesting for two years now and in the coming months we must have a clearer perspective," he said. If all goes well, in 2021 the company could begin to export this fruit.

Asparagus fell
Until before the pandemic, Complejo Agroindustrial Beta was a leader in asparagus exports, but this is the sector that was most affected by the global crisis. According to Lionel Arce, based on data they obtained from the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat), asparagus exports fell by 50% between January and July over the same period of last year.

“We hope to lessen the impact. Recovery will depend a lot on what Senasa does this year, which goes hand in hand with field certification. The asparagus sector is the only one that is not fully formalized,” he stated.
