According to data from Ukraine's Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first half of 2020, the country imported 2,100 tons of watermelons and melons worth 1.97 million dollars, which is three times more than in the same period of the year.
The Association noted that, according to preliminary estimates, early watermelon production fell by 50% due to abnormally cold weather in May and heavy rains in June. As a result of the lack of domestic supply, Ukraine had to import a significant volume of cucurbits in June 2020.
According to the association, there will be no interruptions in the supply of fruit to the Ukrainian market in September 2020. Currently, growers in the Kherson region and the Mykolaiv region are harvesting late watermelons.
