An Israeli company is planning on adding yet another interesting product to its export range - chestnut squash. “Right now, the entire yield is going to the local market,” says Yuval Shahaf from Galil Export. “But, we plan to export at least 20% of this production.”
Yuval says they’ll start exports to Europe first. “Currently, there are about 1,000 acres (just over 400 hectares) of chestnut squash in Israel. It grows mainly in the desert regions. Each acre produces six to eight tons.” This winter vegetable is a special variety from a family of acorn squash.
Though acorn squash is low in calories, it’s highly nutritious. According to various sources, it’s especially high in vitamin C, but also an excellent source of of other nutrients too like magnesium, potassium, and fibre.
This highly versatile vegetable is doing well in Israel. “Prices are very good, especially in the winter months. It goes for about €2 per kg,” concludes Shahaf. He is confident that Galil Export’s chestnut squash will be just as popular in Europe. “It is easy to cook and the taste is wonderful.”
