Abdelkader Benchagra and Abdelmoumen El Achkar, Mister Avocado:

"Plenty of opportunities for Moroccan avocados on European market"

At Mister Avocado in Ridderkerk, the Moroccan avocado season is once again in the starting blocks. The company works together with Ecomac Maroc, which has been one of the largest producers and exporters of Moroccan avocados for years. While the bulk of the company's exports used to go to Spain, with the founding of Mister Avocado last year, the company aims to conquer the rest of the European market.

This week, the first Greenskin avocados from Morocco are due to arrive at Mister Avocado and will be followed by Hass avocados in the second week of November. "Depending on the market situation, we can supply Moroccan avocados until April," says Abdelkader Benchagra. This year Morocco is experiencing an off-year and production will be lower than last year.

“We used to export our total volume to Spain. Last year the ratio between Spain and the other European countries was still fifty-fifty, but we ultimately want to acquire a larger share outside Spain,” says Abdelmoumen. "The Moroccan avocados are climatically comparable to the Spanish avocados, but I expect that in time the volume from Morocco will be greater than from Spain."

"Ecomac Mister Avocado Alliance has built up a broad network among local growers and a good and trusted name in Morocco, thanks to years of cooperation. From this year we started with a strategic plan about our own cultivation. Normally we buy entire plots, after which we harvest, pack, sort, cool and export them ourselves, which will become more our own cultivation over time. Last year we sold 3,000 tonnes of avocados on the European market," says Abdelmoumen El Achkar, CEO and co-owner of Mister Avocado. Mister Avocado also offers organic avocados. "Last year we exported most of the organic avocados to Spain, but several European parties have already shown interest for this year."

"At the moment we are still mainly focusing on wholesalers, but we also want to serve supermarkets in the future. Ultimately, we want to find long-term partners to supply avocados all year round, but first we want to establish our name with the quality of Moroccan avocados on the market. We are really looking for partners, so not one-day-flies who want to take advantage of a certain market situation, but customers who really want to build something up for the longer term! "
