Harm Valckx: "Kg packs expected for Spanish/Moroccan season"

"In Europe, the large blueberry stocks will run out in the next ten days"

Blueberry volumes are falling. "The Peruvian season is almost over and so supply is now declining sharply. The product's shelf life is also shortening. We had lots of blueberries in Europe, but these will run out quickly in the next ten days", says Harm Valckx from Berry Packing Services.

"It's going quite well with Argentinian blueberries being imported via air freight. However, those coming in by ship are of much lower quality. The first Chilean berries will begin arriving soon. Significant volumes of these will get here from week 53 or week 1 onwards."

According to this service provider, blueberries remain a Christmas item. "There are quite a few chain stores that will have blueberries in the coming weeks. Current market prices vary considerably for good and slightly inferior quality products. It's only the real top prices that are difficult to reach this year."

Harm sees the demand for larger berry packaging continuing. "We're selling lots of 500g packs. But, with the Spanish and Moroccan seasons, even 1 kg could come onto the market. Huge volumes are expected from these countries. The big question is whether this is a one-off or a long-term trend," Valckx concludes.
