Aldi close to closing deal at one Tallahassee location as hiring begins for another
Aldi is setting its sights on a new grocery store at the University Village on Tallahassee's west side. The German discount grocery is close to closing a deal to build a 20,000 square-foot new store in a detached parcel, a former Capital City Bank branch, within the 20-acre shopping center. Located on a .77-acre strip, it will be sandwiched between Aveda Institute and Ocala Road. "They are very excited about the location, and they’re very excited about Tallahassee,” said Steve Leoni, co-founder of Student Housing Partners, the shopping center's property manager. Leoni expects the deal to close within a month. He also said the grocer may be in the market to open four or five stores in Leon County.

Amazon to face U.S. union push in year ahead
In 2021, Amazon.com Inc is poised to face a renewed challenge from groups it has long countered: unions. Energized by protests at Amazon’s U.S. warehouses and a more labor-friendly administration assuming office, unions are campaigning at the world’s largest online retailer to see if its warehouse or grocery workers would like to join their ranks. A major test is expected early next year when workers at one warehouse decide whether to unionize. The company has not faced a union election in the United States since 2014, and a “yes” vote would be the first ever for a U.S. Amazon facility.

UK: Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer battle it out for the same York train station location
A Marks and Spencer food shop may not open at York railway station – after a rival supermarket put in plans for the same site.
Sainsbury’s has applied for planning permission to open one of its Local branches in the area of the station which was formerly the ticket office. In September 2019 it was reported that Marks and Spencer had applied for planning permission to open a branch of M&S Simply Food in the former ticket office. The plans were given the go-ahead in February – but the retailer appears to have pulled out of the scheme. A planning statement says: “The new retail unit was to be occupied by M&S. The scheme comprised similar works to what is now proposed within this application.

South Africa: Woolworths launches same-day delivery service
Woolworths has announced the trial launch of its new same-day delivery service – Woolies Dash. The service will give customers access to fast delivery of Woolworths quality groceries, including a wide range of fresh produce, pantry staples and household essentials directly off the shelves, the retailer said. “We have seen a marked growth of our online sales in the past 12 months. Woolies Dash complements our already expansive online service, from our scheduled delivery service with broad regional footprint, to our drive-through click and collect service, and now our same-day service with Woolies Dash,” said Liz Hillock, Woolworths head of Online and Mobile.

UK: Asda shoppers 'speechless' after discovering last-minute delivery 'offer'
Supermarket shoppers have been left 'speechless' over one man's approach to booking Asda delivery slots for the Christmas period. Slots quickly booked up this year as many people opted (or were forced to) stay at home instead of venturing out to the shops, and were in high demand as people fought it out to secure a time to get their turkey delivered. Unfortunately, some people have abused the system, and have selfishly booked more slots than they need to. One shopper admitted to booking 23 slots with his local supermarket, which he is now flogging on social media for £15 a pop.

India: Delhi High Court rules Amazon's attempt to control Future violative of FEMA FDI
The Delhi High Court has ruled that US e-commerce giant Amazon's attempt to control Future Retail through a conflation of agreements it has with an unlisted unit of the Indian company will be violative of the FEMA FDI rules, the Kishore Biyani-led firm said on Wednesday. Giving out its analysis of the Delhi High Court's December 21 judgment, Future Retail Ltd (FRL) in a filing to stock exchanges said its board approving a Rs 24,713 crore deal to sell assets to Reliance Retail has been held "valid in law" by the court. It said the entire legal basis of the emergency arbitration award that Amazon secured to halt the Rs 24,713 crore deal, "stands vitiated".
