Supplies of Florida corn look to be down this season.
“As an industry, we are still down 20 percent because of extremely cold temperatures during plantings--including a hard freeze in early February,” says Bert Barnes, account manager and corn commodity manager for Duda Farm Fresh Foods. Barnes says to date it is still behind due to those temperatures, but that week by week it’s over projected harvest. “The rain and great growing conditions have brought the crop on a few days early,” adds Barnes.
In all, Duda should wrap up with Florida corn around May 25th which is the usual time.
Along with supplies of corn coming from Belle Glade, Clewiston and Pahokee, FL, competing product is also coming from Nogales, AZ.

Good weather-related demand
Meanwhile demand, largely coming from the Northeast and Canada, has been good in the past two weeks particularly due to those regions experiencing a warmer spring. “And we’re already seeing increased consumption in our value-added line of Tray Pack Sweet Corn,” says Barnes.
All of this has left pricing very high compared to years past. “But it’s finally found its home and typical average for this time of year,” adds Barnes, noting that in the next few weeks, volumes will continue to increase, especially towards Memorial Day.
