In 2020, the world exported 3,669.12 million kilos of watermelons. Spain was the world's leading exporter with 839.62 million kilos, i.e. 22.88% of the total.
It was followed by Mexico with 593.89 million kilos (16.19%), Italy with 306.61 million kilos (8.36%), and Morocco with 241.94 million kilos (6.59 %).
The United States ranked fifth with 228.94 million kilos (6.24%). It was followed by Greece with 204.46 (5.6%), Guatemala with 115.02 (3.13%), the Netherlands with 113.33 million kilos (3.09%), Brazil with 107.85 million kilos (2.94%), and Vietnam in tenth place with 97.55 million kilos (2.66%), according to Hortoinfo based on data from Comtrade.
In the last 5 years, Morocco has tripled its watermelon exports, going from 79.56 million kilos in 2016 to 241.94 million kilos in 2020.
Revenue
Spain was also the country that obtained the most income from watermelon exports last year, with a total of 445.25 million euro, which accounts for 27.46% of the world total (1,621.22 million euro).
It was followed by Mexico with 234.17 million euro (14.44%) and Morocco with 140.85 million euro (8.69%).
Italy ranked fourth with 112.42 million euro (6.93%), and the United States ranked fifth with 110.64 million euro (6.82%).
Prices
Morocco achieved the best prices for its watermelon exports in 2020 with an average price of € 0.58/kg. It was followed by Spain with an average price of € 0.53/kg, and the United States with an average price of € 0.48/kg.
Destinations
Spain sent 330.72 million kilos of watermelon to Germany, 139.96 to France, 73.55 to the United Kingdom, 57.06 to the Netherlands, and 32.93 million kilos to Poland.
Mexico sent 99.99% of its watermelons to the US market.
Italy exported 132.75 million kilos to Germany, 42.05 million to Poland, and 25.63 million kilos to the Czech Republic.
Morocco exported 87.78 million kilos to France, 78.01 to Spain, and 26.95 million kilos to the Netherlands.
