Chinese market price for imported papayas is lower than last season

The papaya is a small-scale fruit in the Chinese market. It is not a fruit that every fruit seller will sell. And consumers do not regularly buy papayas. The papaya season in the northern hemisphere begins in September and lasts until October. Kevin, the purchasing manager at FruitDay, recently talked about the conditions in the papaya market.

According to Kevin the number of clients who purchase papayas from FruitDay is quite stable. These customers are mainly people who pay attention to healthy food and healthy fruit drinks. Most clients are based in the Yangzi River Delta. The sales volume of papayas grows larger every year.

Dole papayas from the Philippines are the most famous import papayas in the Chinese market. However, the global shipping crisis and the high shipping cost form severe obstacles for fruit import and export. The Chinese import volume of papayas from the Philippines is smaller than in previous years. "The retail price of import papayas was recently around 15 yuan [2.33 USD] per papaya (of 400+ grams). That is somewhat lower than in previous years," said Kevin.

FruitDay was established in 2009. FruitDay is one of the leading new-retail companies in the Chinese fresh produce market. FruitDay and the supermarkets under their banner manage the sales of more than 15,000 kinds of commercial products. More than 80% of these products are imported.

The motto of FruitDay is 'help people to quickly and conveniently taste great fruit and excellent fresh produce'. FruitDay cooperates with various import fruit brands to organize promotional activities throughout the year. Their aim is to bring even more varieties of even tastier import fruits from all over the world to Chinese consumers. In June, for example, the FruitDay City Supermarket joined hands with Hortgro Pome to organize a festive opening of the "South African Apple Season". In July FruitDay worked with ClemensGold to arrange the first event in 2021 that combined an official opening of the ClemensGold clementine season with a clementine-themed competition.
