Record-breaking pomegranate harvested in Salento

The Wonderful pomegranate harvested on October 28th 2021 at Sole Italia in Nociglia (Lecce), boasts a circumference of 48.2 cm and weighs 1,347 grams.

Vincenzo Vadrucci, president of the Agromea cooperative, explains that: "The company is a partner of ours and has 10 hectares dedicated to the Wonderful variety. It seems the record-breaking fruit comes from an orchard in its 4th year and the company reported that, on a particular tree, 2 fruits seemed rather large and heavy. We immediately measured them and found out one of them was the second-largest pomegranate in the world! The second reached a circumference of 47 cm."

"We did not break the previous record set in China a few years ago only by a few mm, as that fruit had a circumference of 48.7 cm. We are anyway pleased with the work of our partners - every day, they work with passion and dedication to grow high-quality appealing fruits."

Orchard owned by Sole Italia

"A few hours after it was harvested, the pomegranate was shipped to Verona, while the 47 cm one is still in our storage units waiting to be sent to a market. As we also work with the big retail chain, we aim at obtaining uniform standard fruits, with an average circumference of 30 cm and a weight that does not exceed 500 g."
