First UK arrivals of Red Phoenix plums from South Africa

“The first arrivals from Lucerne Fresh have arrived after what can only be described as a problematic start to the South African stonefruit season. Early rains, followed by heat waves have only confounded the issues which certainly haven't been helped by significant supply chain challenges with vessel delays,” said Steve Belsey from FreshPro.

Steve has built up a good following with his customers who are always looking for new premium red flesh plum varieties

"Red Phoenix fits the bill - with its super sweet flavour, great size and shelf life. Red Phoenix will be seen on the high street over the next couple of weeks, mainly in the premium packs (smaller sizes in standard packs.) It's actually already finished in SA so volumes will be limited.”

The South African stonefruit season is half way through with another seven million cartons (5kg) expected. The main culitvars still to be picked are Larry Anne, African Delight, Southern Belle and Angelino, Flavorking, Ruby Star, Flavorfall and September Yummy.

Freshpro are receiving the Red Phoenix in the Lucerne and Simply Gold brands.

South African plum arrivals will continue until the middle of May.
