Producers in Piura, with the support of the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa), have started a 2022 export campaign in the region, which is expected to exceed the 5,730 tons of blueberry exports achieved in the previous campaign. The development of blueberries in the Piura region has expanded to around 852 hectares of blueberries. 4,490.98 tons during 2020 and 5,730.51 tons in 2021; for this year, this increase in exportable volumes is expected to continue, benefiting the regional economy. Varieties grown in the area include Biloxi, Ventura, Kestrel and RocĂo.
For the success of the campaign, a series of phytosanitary actions are being carried out by the agricultural health sector in cooperation with producers and the agricultural export sector to safeguard the health of the products. For the campaign, blueberry production sites need to be certified, which includes verifying the implementation of proper integrated pest management, the correct use of pesticides and the implementation of good agricultural practices.
It also certifies processing and packaging plants, which have authorized operations this season at four plants in the production areas of Castile, Piura and Tamarindo. At these factories, Senasa inspectors check the traceability system of products, from harvesting to shipping to different international destinations. The phytosanitary certification of the goods is carried out in strict accordance with the work plan approved by the importing country to ensure the safety of the fruit.
The main destinations for blueberries produced in Piura are the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, China, Canada and other countries.
