Still many opportunities for avocados

Avocados are becoming increasingly popular, according to research by RaboResarch. The research indicates that some 40 per cent of the world’s avocados end up in the United States, where on average almost three times as many are eaten as in Europe where the average consumption per person is 1.5 kilos per year. “And there is still room for growth, although we think it will be slightly slower. We expect the European Union to start buying avocados from more different countries,” said Cindy van Rijswijck, Food & Agri specialist at RaboResearch.

Avocado producers and sellers also observe that there is room for further development of avocado sales and see that some European markets offer good opportunities. Talking about the avocado-market, Avocado producer Westfalia’s CEO Alk Brand sees a very positive story. “The international market is still growing. The consumption of avocado’s in Europe compared to the United States and Mexico is still relatively low. So there is still a big upside for us.” David Bruggen, Camposol’s US General Manager observes that the turnover continues to grow every year and that all markets - the United States, Europe and Asia - are showing good results.
