Ahold Delhaize USA’s Stop & Shop has reopened three more supermarkets under a $140mln program to upgrade its New York City stores. US: Clover Food Lab opens newest location complete with specialty grocery store
Clover Food Lab, a Massachusetts-based vegetarian fast food chain, has launched its newest location featuring a specialty grocery store, according to a company post. The 400-square-foot specialty grocery store at CloverRow, located at 330 Foley St. in Somerville, Massachusetts, focuses on locally produced goods like maple syrup, hot sauce and salad dressings, according to Boston.com. The department will also include fresh produce from local farms along with items like hummus and soups that were previously only available from the company as takeout options.

Zero-waste online grocer The Rounds raises $38mln
The Rounds, a zero-waste online grocer, raised $38mln in a Series A round led by Annie Kadavy at Redpoint Ventures and Andrew Chen at Andreesen Horowitz, according to a company blog post. The e-grocer delivers products in refillable packaging that customers then return to get cleaned and reused. For $10 per month, members get free weekly refills with no order minimums. The funding comes at a time when The Rounds is scaling its geographic reach and growing its membership base, which totals more than 10,000 members, Alex Torrey, co-founder and CEO of The Rounds, wrote in the post.

SPAR Croatia starts building new logistics centre
The construction of the first phase of SPAR Croatia’s new logistics centre in Donja Zdenčina, located in the municipality of Klinča Sela in Zagreb County, has begun. The investment in this project which will greatly improve and facilitate the company’s operational efficiency exceeds €100mln. In the first phase, the Distribution Centre (DC) which should be completed by the end of 2024 will employ about 500 team members.

Luxembourg: Organic grocer OUNI closes its doors
OUNI, a packaging-free store, has closed both of its locations in Luxembourg City and Dudelange. The cooperative was declared bankrupt. Plagued by large debts (over 350,000 euros), the OUNI cooperative went bankrupt six years after opening its first store in Luxembourg City. The second store had opened in 2020, but due to the pandemic crisis the sales of the 100% bulk brand decreased. The stores offered fruit, vegetables, cereal, milk, and hygiene products without packaging.

Delivery startup Getir in advanced talks to buy Gorillas
Getir, the Istanbul-based delivery startup, is in advanced talks to buy rival Gorillas Technologies GmbH, people familiar with the matter said. The proposed deal would be a mix of cash and equity, the people said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. No final decisions have been made and the deliberations may not result in a transaction, they said. The combination would give Getir, which is backed by Mubadala Investment Co. and Sequoia Capital, scale in key European markets including the UK and Germany. Gorillas, which last raised funds at a $3bln valuation a year ago, has been exploring options after investors became more cautious on the money-losing industry. Representatives for Getir and Gorillas declined to comment.

UK: Asda to cut delivery drivers’ pay by 12% despite staff shortage
Asda is slashing 1,500 grocery delivery drivers’ hourly pay by more than 12% despite the cost of living crisis. The UK’s third largest supermarket chain is ending a £1.50-an-hour premium introduced in the summer to help attract and retain drivers delivering groceries to homes from some London stores, including Charlton, Wembley and Colindale, as well as outlets in Bristol and the south coast.

UK: Plant-based food sales rise, but meat sales not affected
UK’s craving for meat is not affected by campaigns for plant-based alternatives, according to new research by the University of Surrey. The study looked at UK supermarket sales during the ‘Veganuary’ period and found that while the average weekly sales of plant-based foods increased significantly by 57%, there was no reciprocal reduction in meat sales.
