Guatemala might start exporting avocado to the United States by mid-2023

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA), Jose Angel Lopez, stated within the framework of the II National Fruit Summit held in Antigua that the country met all the eligibility requirements to export avocados to the United States (in particular the pest risk analysis requested by Washington) and that Guatemala might start exporting avocado to the US by mid-2023.

"Four pest monitorings were carried out for two years and the fifth one is currently being carried out in 65 farms," stated Lopez.

"Guatemala is waiting for the mitigation measures that the authorities will propose. We trust that, if everything works out as it has so far, we could reach the US market by the middle of next year," he added.

Guatemala's avocado exports continue to grow. Exports up until July 2022 exceeded seven million dollars, i.e. 66% more than in the same period of 2021.
