Organic banana supply is plentiful from Organics Unlimited’s farms and network of small growers in Colima, Mexico as well as Ecuador. “We have robust, reliable volumes of Cavendish bananas year-round but peak production is right now,” says Mayra Velazquez de León, President & CEO of Organics Unlimited. Last year, supplies were impacted by a devastating storm, but the company’s growers haven’t been affected this year, resulting in strong supplies.
“Demand is strong as well,” said Velazquez de León. Despite rising fears of a recession in the United States, demand for organic bananas shows no sign of slowing down. “In spite of higher input costs, bananas continue to be one of the most affordable, healthy purchases consumers can make. They are also a reliable item for retailers in economic phases like this one.”
Ethical choice
Strong supplies in combination with strong demand sound like an ideal scenario, but the increased costs associated with banana production are of big concern. “Growers and shippers continue to absorb many of the increased costs,” shared Velazquez de León. Independent retailers and co-ops are helping to move in the right direction. “The retailers we’ve had the opportunity to work with have done a wonderful job on consumer education when it comes to the true cost of production and knowing there is an ethical choice when it comes to bananas. They understand the impact is significant on the low-margin banana business.
